Inspections have been called for tomorrow's cards at Sandown (7.30 am), Aintree (7.00 am), Chepstow (7.30 am) and Wetherby (7.00 am) as Storm Darragh moves in.
At 40/1 with William Hill (four places) I had thought Monte Igueldo worth a second look in the Becher feature at Aintree (2.07) but there's an amber weather warning for wind in place, with the forecast predicting gusts up to 65 mph.
On his first start since July Monte Igueldo ran well for a long way behind Celebre d'Allen at Bangor last month, fading out of contention with a niggling error at the final flight, eventually finishing third. He was beaten under ten lengths, Major Dundee some 12 lengths further adrift in sixth.
For whatever reason Gary Hanmer's charge ran without the declared tongue-tie that day; he looks weighted to reverse the form with the winner here as Micheal Nolan has been booked to ride, replacing seven pound claimer Callum Pritchard.
His experience over fences doesn't compare with the rest of the field but Chianti Classico carries 12-00 and he sneaks in at the bottom of the handicap with just 10-03.
Vic Venturi in 2009 was the last winner to carry top weight to victory; in the last ten years only two have won carrying more than 11-00: Blaklion (11-06 in 2017); and Ashtown Lad (11-05 in 2022).
At the head of the market King Turgeon beat Gaboriot four and a quarter lengths in the Grand Sefton four weeks ago but the step back up in trip is likely to benefit the latter.
Last year Chambard, with Miss Lucy Turner up, came home 13 lengths clear of Coko Beach (Percussion third, Celebre d'Allen fourth); if racing goes ahead, the partnership will try to repeat the trick off a mark five pounds higher.
To use a phrase picked up from clerks of the course around the country, I'll take another look in the morning, but it's difficult to be optimistic that racing will go ahead given the forecast.

Both Aintree and Chepstow have failed inspections but racing, currently, goes ahead at Sandown and Wetherby.
The London National looks difficult and given Storm Darragh it is probably a day to keep the betting power dry…..so I’ve taken a look at the Mares’ hurdle earlier on the card!

With a system tissue of 9/2 I’m keen, at current odds of around 7/4, to take on the favourite Larchmont Lass. Down to mark of 114 the system can see the old girl Midnight Ginger running a big race for her small yard in a Saturday handicap. MG spent most of last season facing the bigger obstacles with varying degrees of success, back over hurdles at Exeter’s Haldon Cup meeting LTO she showed her well being over a shorter trip and faster ground than ideal. The field is now down to 10 runners and 20/1 3 places 1/5 odds looked worth a punt.

Non-runner now, TW :(
I see Cronkwell legend has been backed in the London National.
I'm interested in Top Of The Bill in that race, primarily on the back of comments made by Jim Old (trainer's rep) after the horse won at Wetherby in March off 133.
"...we want to win a good long distance race with him next season. The owner [Charles C. Walker] would love to win the Welsh National and I told him we won't run over further than 3m this season so we keep that up our sleeve. He'll stay forever."
He had a pipe-opener over an inadequate trip at Carlisle five weeks ago and doesn't hold an entry in this year's Welsh National.

I looked at Top Of The Bill, agree that 2 ½ miles LTO was not far enough…..but will 3 ½ miles be too far?
With MG a non runner I’m currently working through the Foxrock at Navan in search of my bet!
Good luck if you play.

Top weight and up in trip, I’m happy to swerve Hercule Du Seuil, but system 2nd top rated Aime Desjy [AD] has caught my eye at a nice price.
Given his low mileage AD cannot have been the easiest to train and he is making only his 7th start over fences in this. He ran some decent races last term not least when 5th in the Topham off a 6lb higher mark. His two subsequent runs post the Topham were on ground probably faster than ideal and over a trip that might stretch him. AD’s two runs after a layoff have produced a win and a place so he may go well fresh and I’ve taken an interest in the race at 16/1 5 places 1/5 odds.

Good luck, TW!
