To me, this looked a decent renewal of the Derby and New Approach's victory something to celebrate. Yet the undercurrent of controvesy and recrimination which has surrounded this horse's participation was never far away, even in the winner's enclosure; Jim Bolger strikes me as an individual who won't lose too much sleep over all that. The first three home could meet again in the Irish Derby three weeks hence.
Statto, the BBC's 'betting expert', appears to have sorted out his money problems. The Corporation didn't want Angus giving his market commentaries at Aintree's Grand National meeting while he still had a bankruptcy case hanging over him. Viewers will have been pleased to see The Numerate One back on our screens, together with the laconic Gary Wiltshire, the over-dressed Claire Balding et al...
There will be no more racing at Epsom this season while building work is completed. I'm looking forward to taking Mrs Tips to the new on-site hotel...
Just eight days until Royal Ascot starts; I must locate a copy of Raceform Update's Royal Ascot Guide.
Over the weekend I struck a deal with Mrs Tips. I watched the Derby day racing on Saturday while she watched the men's singles final from Roland Garros on Sunday. Nadal's defeat of Federer may have been expected but the manner of that defeat certainly wasn't. Will this be the year Roger Federer relinquishes his Wimbledon crown? Hills bet 11/10 Federer and 4/1 Djokovic while Nadal is 9/2 with Coral.

McCririck goes part-time
Today's Racing Post leads with the story that Channel 4 chiefs have decided to reduce the number of Saturdays John McCririck will appear on our screens, with immediate effect. I dare say there are some of you out there who will consider this jolly good news but, as you might expect, Mr. McCririck is not so chuffed. He claims this measure has made him a part-timer. Now, I know it's a bit rich when somebody who tends to work Saturdays only complains of being made a part-timer, when the likes of you and me are working five days and more each week, but such are the inequalities of the world in which we live. Rumours that Channel 4 desperately wanted Mr. McCririck to cut back on the outlandish outfits are wide of the mark, as is the suggestion that Angus 'Statto' Loughran is viewed as a possible replacement.

Weekend update
The good news is that Kauto Star's suspected injury is not as serious as was first feared. The horse has a minor infection in a foot; Paul Nicholls has assured the media the horse is still on course for the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Denman's price appears to have shortened with this news - he's a best priced 13/8 now, while Ladbrokes make both horses 5/4 joint favourites.
An interesting snippet to come out of the BBC's coverage at Ascot and Haydock was that senior handicapper Phil Smith would have allocated Snowy Morning an additional nine pounds for the Grand National if the weights had been framed a week later. Snowy Morning is a 10/1 favourite with several bookmakers although Corals are taking a different view and offer a miserly 7/1.
The Francois Doumen trained Kasbah Bliss turned around Long Walk Hurdle form with Lough Derg in no uncertain terms at Haydock yesterday. The turn of foot displayed after the last was impressive and brought to mind a piece Nick Mordin wrote in the Weekender dated 5-9 December 2007. In that article Nick talked about this horse's ability to quicken at the end of a three mile race. Previously this season KB had run twice in this country, disappointing on both occasions, but yesterday it was evident why he's held in high regard and is considered by some as the next Baracouda. Is this the horse to challenge Inglis Drever in the World Hurdle? Totesport and Corals offer 10/1 at the time of writing while Ladbrokes only go 7/1.
There was no sign of Angus 'Statto' Loughran during the BBC's racing coverage yesterday. When you're down on your luck, it appears the Corporation are only too willing to drop you like the proverbial hot potato...

'Statto' is bust...
It would appear that it's not just Derren Brown who has been performing racing illusions recently. The BBC's betting expert, Angus 'Statto' Loughran, has been declared bankrupt.
I can hardly believe it. Is anything ever as it seems? With this news following on from the demise of the Ceefax racing service, can anyone tell us what is going on in the BBC's racing department?
