Cheltenham Festival 2020 - the betting debrief

Shown below a record of the blog's highlighted selections at the 2020 Cheltenham Festival to a nominal one point level stakes wager (1 point win, 0.5 points each way) with bets settled at advised prices and each way returns calculated to one fifth the odds.

For the fourth time in the past five years the blog's Festival selections have returned a profit, although this year's modest figure contrasts rather sharply with last year's performance.

To quote my regular life coach and mentor: 'Let's be honest, now, a modest profit beats the thumping loss you usually record over the course of a season.' Withering. What with the whole wellbeing agenda and everything, perhaps it's time I started looking for a replacement...

If I could return close to 10% ROI week on week I’d be in clover!

Your Festival blog was a great read AND a solid return.

Aintree…..who knows?

Your figures look impressive, TW!

At the moment, betting on the exchanges suggests Aintree is unlikely to go ahead.

Under a headline 'Stuck at home? Here's how you can beat the boredom', yesterday's edition of The Times suggests box sets and films to watch, books to read and podcasts to listen to in the event of enforced self-isolation.

You won't be surprised to learn none of The Times' suggestions makes any particular appeal. Instead, in such circumstances, I shall use the time more productively(?) to look at the performance of Irish trained runners in this year's Festival handicaps and compare the results with those from last year.

Following a brief initial investigation I think I'm correct in saying that, as per last year, of the ten handicaps Britian won five, Ireland five:

Ultima: GB
Northern Trust: GB
Coral Cup: GB
Boodles: IRE (three of first four placings)
Pertemps: IRE (four of first five placings)
Brown Advisory: GB
Kim Muir: IRE
County: IRE (six of first seven placings)
Grand Annual: IRE (first three placings)
Martin Pipe: GB

One swallow does not a summer make; you had a solid performance this year (10% ROI) and a fantastic performance last year (169% ROI)....the ups, downs and downs of racing!

Please feel free to share any nuggets re. Irish handicappers your research may uncover if you need to self-isolate!
